Sky Lanterns
I found my stash of sky lanterns the other day so I thought I'd do another post about them. (See my other post right here.) Sky Lanterns are basically mini hot air balloons that are used at festivals in Asia. A few years ago I let off a bunch at my birthday party and then on the beach with my family in Mexico. They are non flammable and bio degradable but there are still issues with fire safety and littering because once they take off you usually can't find them again. You have to treat them like fireworks and use them carefully. I love the idea to use these for a winter wedding. They hold large festivals in Thailand and Taiwan that someday I hope to attend. Love these. I had a wedding client that was going to have these but the fire dept shut them down, such a bummer. I love your blog Jordan, so fresh and fun.

ReplyDeleteI love them too. I bought some for my reception and got shot down by the venue owner. In fact, if any of you want a box of these in turquoise (I think I have 20) just let me know and I'll send them to you.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was little we hung out with a lot of musicians and artists, one of them showed my brother and I how to make these out of criss crossed cardboard hanger covers, dry cleaning bags and birthday candles. Very dangerous but lots of fun :) He called them "Bags of Whoa" because when people would see them, they'd look up and say "WHOA!" ha ha.
ReplyDeleteI made one of these in high school physics class - we just used big pieces of tissue paper, cut out the panels, and glued them together. Then we heated them with a space heater, I think, and they flew several hundred feet up. Not glow-y but still fun and colorful during the day.

In Portugal, Porto, we also release illuminated flame-propelled balloons during festivities of 24th June and it´s an amazing night!

ReplyDeleteIn Taiwan,we usually write our wishes on the lanterns. Then we fly the lanterns and fly the wishes!
