I've been really inspired by food lately, especially good quality ingredients. I stopped by the farmer's market at the Ferry Building this morning and picked up some groceries. Sometimes I forget how much better the food is there. The strawberries were the most flavorful I've ever had and the peppery arugula was so full of flavor it was completely different from the stuff I buy at the grocery store. I also picked up some freshly churned butter and pretty eggs (which I totally bought just because they were beautiful.) I spend more than I do at the grocery store but it feels like my quality of life goes up significantly. Have you been going to your local farmer's market this Spring?

your purchases sound lovely. you've inspired me to stop by ours when i get back to the states!
ReplyDeleteOur Farmer's Market doesn't start until June here in Salt Lake (probably because it SNOWED here yesterday) so I am quite envious of you. But when it does start, it is my favorite morning of the week.
ReplyDeleteYour eggs ARE beautiful! :) Would love to know where you (or they) go those terrific little baskets to house them in. TIA
ReplyDeletei know, i'm happy that organic eggs are good because i'd buy them solely on their beauty anyway.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the farmers market. i get all of my produce there and most of everything else i need...the rest i pick up from our local co-op. the farmers market is totally worth it. and it's just so much fun!!
ReplyDeleteI go as often as I can. I'm jealous that you get to go the the Ferry Building Market. That's really nice.
ReplyDeleteagreed! i've been trying to go the ferry bldg on saturdays (i can't make it tuesdays). everything takes better--we've started shopping for saturday night dinner ingredients on sat. morning at the market. SO good. i just bought a bunch of squash that was so much more flavorful than the store.
ReplyDeleteI actually just went this afternoon. Came home with strawberries, zuccini, squash, garlic, a few tomatoes, as well as greens + root vegetables. I totally feel like my quality of life is much higher when I have local, quality food from farmers I can meet!
ReplyDeleteYes, and just like you said...it is all about quality of life!!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - we go every Saturday when it's open. Love it, and love getting fresh seafood and locally-raised meat too. Awesome.
ReplyDeletebeautiful eggs!!! they look so great in those wooden boxes. oh the beauty of farmer's markets!
ReplyDeletethe ferry building is the best! Ours just started, and I go every week, and blog about my trip and the recipes I plan to make on monday afternoons. :)
ReplyDeleteWe always do. Even though it cost a bit more. It does feel like your quality of life is upgraded.
ReplyDeletehusband argues regularly for "quality of life" purchasing. Choosing the local well designed market over the walmart of markets- despite the dollar difference- is always preferred in our household!
ReplyDeleteI was just at the Mountain View one on Sunday =) I agree: more expensive, but superb quality!
ReplyDeleteIf you're not a regular Stone House olive oil customer, you must try it next time you're at the Ferry Building. I fell in love with it when I was there two years ago, and a friend and I get an order shipped now every couple months. I never thought I'd care about olive oil like that, but it is AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteThose egg cartons are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Paula, those baskets would be so handly for so many things!
ReplyDeleteI love going to the farmers market! I can't wait until ours opens up. The food is sooo much better.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely spoiled for farmer's markets in the bay area. If I'm in the city, I love grabbing a coffee at the Ferry Building and picking up some produce... and one just started within walking distance of my daughter's school so every week we've been stuffing ourselves silly with those huge sweet strawberries....
ReplyDeleteNow I'm hungry...
Love that market, but mostly early early in the morning, because I can't take the crowds there!
ReplyDeleteHave you had the hot chocolate in the back of the building? Amazing.

ReplyDeletethat egg shot is great
i wish i could shop at farmers markets all the time, but sometimes prices can be dearer and i gotta revert back to the supermarkets /;
ReplyDeleteYes, I have been. in fact, I was at the Ferry Building on Tuesday as well! I go every week. Did you get your butter from the jersey cow guy? So good! I love going to the heirloom organics stand. They have $5 bags of purple mountain spinach. It's prewashed and you get a ton - way more than bagged spinach from the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I love the farmer's market. My favorite things to get there are freshly baked bread, tomatoes, and flowers. I'm dedicated to healthy cooking and baking, so I always go for the best possible ingredients, which are usually the home-grown ones!

If you really cared about food you wouldn't have a Tyson ad at the top of your blog. Have you seen Food, Inc?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI am part of Martha's ad network. They decide what ads run. I actually never pay attention. There is a feature that I can go in and reject certain ads but I've never really figured out how to use it. But also, I don't really mind.
Love the egg photograph, but I also love the photographer -- she was my neighbor in Berkeley and one of the best parts of living there!
ReplyDeleteOurs only has a handful of items -- tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, beans, squash, peaches, and watermelon. No heirloom varieties or anything like that, and most of the stuff is still from vendors vs growers. I'm so envious of the nice farmers' markets!
ReplyDeletethe food is sooo much better at farmer's markets. sometimes i forget and just head to the grocery.. thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteWow, those eggs ARE beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWe've been taking our 8 month old for strolls through our local market, but I have to get used to juggling a baby and a camera, because really the photo taking is half the fun!
