Polaroids into Large Art
I've been picking out art for our apartment so while I was back in San Francisco I grabbed some old polaroid pictures that Paul took a few years ago. These were taken on the Salt Flats and in Nevada on that long stretch of lonely road between San Francisco and Salt Lake City. I especially love the ones from the Salt Flats, its such a beautiful place. I'm going to scan them in and then have them printed very large scale. It could be pretty cool right? When you blow something up like that you lose detail but I think thats perfect for polaroid. I'll of course show pictures when it is completed.

That will be beautiful! I have seen polaroids that have been blown up (some were printed on canvas and put on a stretcher) and they are just gorgeous. If you scan at a high enough resolution, you might not lose too much quality (like scanning negatives).
ReplyDeletegrant hamilton does large scale polaroid art. he scans them in at a super high resolution to keep the quality of the texture.

ReplyDeleteyes! well kind of. not from a polaroid but my friend blew up a picture from marfa with a similar vibe and it was slightly blurry because it was so large and it looked even better because it was a little out of focus, kind of like a painting. gave it a cool vintage vibe.

ReplyDeleteI did this with some of my polaroids and they are beautiful!I think high quality scans are key and I had mine printed on fine art giclee paper. I love how you can see all the texture of the Polaroid. Can't wait to see yours up in the house!

ReplyDeleteJordan, I did this same thing with a few of my ultra sound photos. they are blown up poster sized and will hang in our nursery. Some like the idea, others think it will scare the baby.
ReplyDeleteI knew an artist who would take polaroids and blow them up and print them on watercolor paper. The paper provided texture and reduced sharpness even more, but it was a great effect. Her photos were of landscapes at dusk, so they are very very low light which again added to the indistinct look. I think the artist's name was Beth Miele - I knew her when she was still a student, about 5 years ago.
